Leanie van der Vyver’s Scary Beautiful High Heels

Shocking! Stunning! Scary! Beautiful! these four words still can hardly describe this massive heels dubbed “Scary Beautiful.” The design is more like a ‘strange’ structure than high heels, appears backwards on the foot – with the wearer feet pointing 90° down as if wearing ballet shoes; her shins leaning forward almost 45°, supported by the “front heels” resulting quite impractical movement.

Scary Beautiful is a collaboration piece between Leanie van der Vyver and René van den Berg, a Dutch shoe designer. Leanie van der Vyver who is a South African just recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. And the design is part of her thesis project with a concept to “challenge our current beauty ideals by inflicting an unexpected new beauty standard.” Van der Vyver’s design was nominated for a design prize at Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
